After Jon Jones Injury, Lyoto Machida Wants Alexander Gustafsson ‘As Soon As Possible’

Lyoto Machida may be the UFC’s top light heavyweight contender, but it may nevertheless take awhile for “The Dragon” to receive his next crack at UFC gold.

While Machida had previously set his sights on the winner of Jon Jones’ recent UFC 159 clash with Chael Sonnen, the Brazilian is now requesting to fight Alexander Gustafsson after learning that the injured Jones could be sidelined for some time. The winner of that title eliminator would then challenge “Bones” when the 205-pound champion is back to full strength.

Dana White: GSP has choice of Anderson or Johny Hendricks - FIGHT VIDEO FORUM

SAN JOSE, Calif. — UFC President Dana White noted on Thursday’s UFC on Fox 7 media day that he was going to call his biggest drawing card, welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, later that day to discuss what is next for him. White said he’d given St-Pierre time to heal up after his March 16 win at UFC 158 over Nick Diaz before bringing up a new fight. He noted St-Pierre would have to option to choose whether he would rather take a superfight with Anderson Silva, which would probably be the more lucrative option, or a welterweight title defense against Johny Hendricks. No matter what St-Pierre wants to do, the trigger isn’t going to be pulled until July, since Silva first has to defend his middleweight title against Chris Weidman.

The Hype: UFC fighter Nick Diaz‘probably going to jail’ | NBC on Yahoo! Sports - Yahoo! Sports

UFC fighter Nick Diaz decided the post-fight press conference after a bout with Georges St-Pierre was the perfect time to tell the world, and U.S. Government, he hasn’t paid a cent in taxes his entire life. Michelle Beadle and Dave Briggs take a serious second to debate if there is deeper meaning behind Diaz’s proclamation, but it might be safe to assume the fighter has taken too many blows to the head.

3 Reasons Gegard Mousasi Is Being Overlooked Against Alexander Gustafsson | Bleacher Report

Getting choked by current teammate Phil Davis at UFC 112 in 2010 triggered a transformation in light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson.

Since tasting his only defeat, Gustafsson has amped up his his training and linked up with Davis and his team at Alliance MMA to improve his overall game and shore up some of his grappling deficiencies.

The move paid major dividends for Gustafsson, who followed up his loss with Davis with six straight victories, including convincing decision wins over Thiago Silva and Mauricio Rua.

But the surging Gustafsson can’t punch his ticket for a title shot until he locks horns with arguably his most dangerous opponent since Davis—former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi.

Making his much-anticipated debut against “The Mauler” in his home of Stockholm, Sweden, at UFC on Fuel TV 9, Mousasi will enter the tilt having lost just one fight in his last 22 outings.

With top-flight striking chops and a submission game to match, the grizzled Mousasi could derail the meteoric rise of Gustafsson.

Here’s a glimpse at three reasons “The Dreamcatcher” is being overlooked against Gustafsson.

UFC On FUEL TV Main Event Could Be A Three Rounder - FightLine.com

When the UFC debuts in Sweden, their main event might only be three rounds as the Swedish Federation doesn’t have a permit to sanction five round fights. There are actions in motion with the Martial Arts Delegation to make the fight a five rounder.

“We’ve put forth our arguments for why this should be allowed and validity for why this is a safe match,” said George Sallfeldt, president of the Swedish MMA Federation to Nordic MMA. “Hopefully we’ll see a five rounder. At this point we don’t know.”

The main event for UFC on FUEL TV sees Alexander Gustafsson with home country advantage as he meets Strikeforce import Gegard Mousasi.

Gustafsson currently sits as one of the top names in the light heavyweight division after a win over former champion Mauricio Rua. He is 7-1 inside the Octagon and has finished five of those fights.
